I did manage to taste a single bottle from one of the 4,123 cases that were produced from this batch. The taste and style rivals that of many West Coast IIPA’s including Stone Ruination, though slightly less bitter. If Saint Arnold can figure out how to price the beer for about $9.99 a six pack, a bit under the roughly $15.99 price tag most paid for this beverage, this would be a worthy yearly release from the brewery.

The sales of this rare release in the Divine Reserve series are fueled by Twitter and the infamous #DR11 hash tag. Eager beer geeks use social media to inform others where they might find this prized treasure. Those left out voice their frustrations and lash out at “hoarders” (people that hop form store to store scooping up every entire case possible) and ”scalpers” (people that buy cases and resale well above retail value).

BUT, for those that were unable to find the bitter elixir, I do offer you a consolation prize:

Reviews on Beeradvocate.com list Olde English 800 as “Pretty high quality”, “The best beer/malt liquor on earth” and “Probably the best of the malt liquors.” So why would Pat Morris, Mayor of San Bernardino choose to ban 40 ounce beers in the city?

Morris cites crime as the number one reason for the ban though I respectfully disagree with the Mayor., 40ouncers actually help stimulate the economy. Hobo’s beg for change, spend that money at locally owned gas stations, get hammered, urinate in front of a school bus full of small children and then are arrested by police officers who would not be employed if public bladder elimination by the homeless did not exist. Because we are lazy, we recommend you figure out how to start a petition to fight these types of bans and file it with your local government.

So, to residents of San Bernardino or any other city with a 40 ban, if you can’t buy it … make it.

Olde English 800
5 Gallons

OG: 1.055 (13.5)
FG: 1.004 (1)
ABV: 7%
Color: 4.5 SRM
Bittering Units: 14

3.5 lbs. American 2-row pale malt
3.75 lbs. American 6-row malt
3 lbs. flaked corn
2 HBU (56 MBU) American Cluster hops (pellets) – 105 minutes (bittering)
1.5 HBU (43 MBU) American Nugget hops (pellets) – 105 minutes (bittering)
1/4 tsp. Irish moss
Wyeast 2007 Pilsen Lager yeast

A step infusion mash is employed to mash the grains. Add 10 quarts (9.5L) of 130-degree F (54.5 C) water to the crushed grain and flaked corn, stir, stabilize and hold the temperature at 122 degrees F (50 C) for 30 minutes. Add 5 quarts (1.9 L) of boiling water. Add heat to bring temperature up to 150 degrees F (65.5 C). Hold for about 60 minutes.

After conversion, raise temperature to 167 degrees F (75 C) water, lauter and sparge with 4 gallons (15 L) of 170 degree F (77 C) water. Collect about 6.5 gallons (25 L) of of runoff, add bittering hops and bring to a full and vigorous boil.

The total boil time will be 105 minutes. When 10 minutes remain, add Irish moss. After total wort boil of 105 minutes (reducing wort volume to just over 5 gallons), turn off the heat, then separate or strain out and sparge hops. Chill the wort to 65 degrees F (18 C) and direct into a sanitized fermenter. Aerate the cooled wort well. Add an active yeast culture and ferment for 4 to 6 days in the primary at 55 degrees F (15 C). Then transfer into a secondary fermenter, chill to 50 degrees F (10 C) to age for two more weeks, then lager for two to four more weeks at 40 degrees F (4.5 C).

When secondary aging is complete, prime with sugar, bottle or keg. Let condition at temperatures above 60 degrees F (15.5 C) until clear and carbonated, then store chilled.

If the FDA bans my fightin’ juice in Texas, my new back-up go-to drink will be a large can of Monster Energy Drink, 40oz Olde English, a packet of purple Kool-Aid and some meth mixed in a gallon milk jug and chug.

IndiaGlitz, a popular India based website, is reporting that art director Mohan B Kere has built an entire film set completely out of beer bottles.

According to their website, “the 40000 beer bottles used for an erection of set is for the first time in Indian cinema.” And after 40,000 beers, a set was about all they could manage to erect.

The plan originally called for 60,000 bottles but tragedy struck prior to the construction. Shocking video is provided below by TV9 Kannada TV. If you can’t understand what they are saying, here is a translation.

Reporter: “There are a bunch of beer bottles smashed on the road.”

Bystander: “Sho-nuff”
